Knit, Knot, Weave & Felt
by Mary-Ann Svenson
Mary-Ann Svenson, January 2025.
I am fascinated by textile collage.
As a spinner and weaver for many years, I have always enjoyed the process of making fabric.
Now I love vintage doilies, linen placemats and cotton fabric remnants, retrieved from Op shops.
In recent years, I have participated in workshops that explore eco dyeing, rusting and staining, as well of ways to add colour to these fabrics.
Ripping and cutting and layering of the cotton and linen that has been altered, then gives an opportunity to add simple stitches through all the layers.
Stories seem to unfold as more layers or stitches or found objects are added.
I enjoy the slowness and mindfulness in the stitching, a simple therapy, perhaps?
Letting shapes and textures emerge to become whatever you see.
Rivers that flow, beaches with sea glass, footprints in the sand, someone's garden, a birthday cake, home fires burning.
I hope you find some interesting features in my works, as I continue to experiment with textile collage and the sense of fun that it brings me. Mary-Ann Svenson. 19/01/2025.
